The CMC Exit Strategy

We sat down and talked with Deb (Progressive Nurse Practitioner) and were give two likely scenario's for Clara to be discharged:

scenario #1: They are able to wean her to room air by Monday morning and then they begin a five day countdown. In order to be released without any medical monitors they expect her to go five days without any bradycardia's. If she has one then they reset the countdown. After the second occurrence they will discharge her with a heart monitor. She will probably be on the monitor at home for 1-3 months. Krystal and I would prefer a monitor at home "just in case" but Deb warned us that it will become a pain but Krystal and I are already having a lot of anxiety anticipating Clara's release.

scenario #2: Clare still needs O2 on Monday morning. Then they will turn the O2 back up to 100% @ .1 liter per minute (home treatment) and they will train us on how to use the O2 equipment and heart monitor and release her on Wednesday.

But Deb was very quick to remind us that Clara is in control and anything unexpected can change these scenario's.

We spent four hours will Clara today. She is taking her feeds very well (60 cc). The nurse did remove the O2 during our visit and Clara responded very well. She laid on our chests and slept and maintained her stats. When we gave her next feeding she did have trouble maintaining her O2 saturation levels but as soon as she was finished she was able to maintain her stats. Later we talked with the nurse and she is going to put Clara on O2 during her feeds and then let her breath room air in between.

She will probably weigh 5 lbs or more tonight. She is very much looking like a normal sized baby. Krystal and I both noticed a size difference from yesterday.

Cheers for now...

Mike
